Abstract

Thermal stabilizers are among the most critical additives in the production of PVC granules. These compounds operate through various mechanisms to prevent oxidative and thermal degradation of polymer chains, enabling high-temperature processing. This article presents a comprehensive review of the mechanisms of action, modern types, and practical applications of thermal stabilizers in the cable manufacturing industry.

1. Mechanisms of Thermal Degradation in PVC

Thermal degradation in polyvinyl chloride primarily occurs via two main pathways:

  • First pathway: Dehydrochlorination of the polymer chain at temperatures above 200°C, leading to the release of chlorine atoms and the formation of double bonds within the molecular structure. This phenomenon results in black pigmentation and a significant reduction in mechanical strength.

  • Second pathway: Oxidation of the polymer chain in the presence of oxygen, where free radicals are formed, causing chain scission and the creation of unwanted cross-links.

2. Classification of Modern Thermal Stabilizers

Thermal stabilizers used in the PVC industry are categorized into several types:

  • Lead-based stabilizers, although highly effective, are being gradually phased out due to environmental and health concerns.

  • Calcium-zinc systems, with optimized formulations, offer performance comparable to lead-based stabilizers.

  • Organic tin stabilizers are used in specialized applications due to their excellent thermal stability.

3. Emerging Technologies in Thermal Stabilization

Recent advancements in this field include:

  • The use of zinc oxide nanoparticles and nanoclays as environmentally friendly alternatives. These nano-stabilizers, due to their high effective surface area, allow for up to 40% reduction in consumption while simultaneously improving light stability.

  • The development of multifunctional systems capable of providing not only thermal stabilization but also lubrication and flame-retardant properties, marking another significant achievement in this domain.

4. Performance Evaluation and Testing Methods

The performance of thermal stabilizers is primarily assessed through accelerated thermal stability tests. Key evaluation methods include:

  • Rotating furnace test

  • Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)

  • Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)

Qualitative indicators such as degradation onset time, color change, and melt viscosity stability play a decisive role in selecting the appropriate stabilizer.

5. Practical Considerations in Cable Manufacturing

In the cable industry, the type and amount of stabilizer are selected based on various parameters, including:

  • Processing temperature

  • Insulation thickness

  • Operating conditions of the cable

Thermal stabilizers directly influence the final properties of the cable, such as:

  • Dielectric strength

  • Flexibility at low temperatures

  • Aging resistance

6. Conclusion

Selecting and optimizing an appropriate thermal stabilizer system is a key factor in producing high-quality PVC granules. The development of next-generation stabilizers with higher efficiency and better environmental compatibility represents the main direction of future research in this field. Given the rapid advancements in polymer additives, continued research is essential to achieve optimal formulations.
